Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) is about 10 km north of the city centre and 3 km from Santa Claus Village. The Airport Express bus (airportbus.fi) links the airport, Santa Claus Village, the centre and the railway station, 10 to 15 minutes to town; pay by card on board. City bus 8 does not serve the airport.
Around Lordi Square and the Koskikatu / Hallituskatu axis. Most hotels, the bus terminal, the river bridge and the train station are within walking distance.
Ski and recreation hill just east across the Kemijoki river. Hotels here are quieter, and you can ski straight from the door in winter.
8 km north on the E75, at the Arctic Circle, 3 km from the airport. Linkkari city bus 8 runs there from the railway station and the centre. Several hotels on site or next door (e.g. Santa Claus Holiday Village, Arctic TreeHouse Hotel). Stay here only if Santa is the entire reason for the trip, otherwise it gets repetitive after 24 hours.
Wilderness resort outside town known for its glass-roofed cabins, with no village around it. The Apukka shuttle bus runs from Rovaniemi in autumn and winter.
Night train arrival, the Lapland classic
The Santa Claus Express night train leaves Helsinki in the evening and rolls into Rovaniemi the next morning, in about 12 hours. From a sleeper cabin you wake up already inside the Arctic Circle, snow on the trees outside the window. Private cabins start from €49 (vr.fi); the price depends on the date. Walk from the station into the centre. Your room will not be ready, but most hotels will hold the bag, and you can be on a husky sled by late morning. The night train is the only way to land in Rovaniemi without burning a day.
Finnair's morning flights from Helsinki make a same-day start possible. RVN is about 10 km from the centre, and the Airport Express bus or a taxi gets you to town in 10 to 15 minutes. You can be in the city by mid-morning with the earliest flight. Ask your hotel in advance whether it can hold your luggage or give you an early room, so you can change before the first activity.
Many visitors use Rovaniemi as a base camp for further north. The bus to Levi takes about 2 h 20 (from about €28) and to Saariselkä 3 h 15 to 3 h 40 (from about €44); Ylläs has a winter-only bus of about 4 h 30. If you have time, the smarter move is to spend a full day in Rovaniemi (Arktikum + Santa Village + reindeer + dinner) and continue north the next morning rested. More than three hours on a bus is a long day after a night on the train.
Yes, and also the real Santa, who reads letters here all year. Go in the morning before the buses arrive, queue 10 minutes for the latitude-line photo, walk through the post office (genuinely fun, they have a stamp dated to your visit), watch the reindeer outside, leave by 11:00. Allocate 90 minutes total. The hotels in and next to the village (such as Santa Claus Holiday Village and Arctic TreeHouse Hotel) are calibrated for families who want Santa to walk into breakfast, that's the right reason to book them. For everyone else, stay in town and visit as a half-day trip.
